Event Title Indonesia – Australia Symposium on Strengthening the marine affairs and fisheries cooperation Indonesia and Australia are close neighbors and have maintained mutual diplomatic relations, formal co-operation that ranging from political, security, commercial, cultural issues and people-to-people links. Far from that it has been recognized that there is a long history of traditional Indonesian fishers have visited and fished around the Australian boundary and further to its territory. It is also recognized that the maritime exchanges between the Northern Territory and its northern Asian neighbors are a centuries-old tradition, for hundreds of years Indonesian Makassar fishermen regularly visited the northern Australian coastline in search of The Indonesian fishermen from Makassar established contact and relationship with indigenous communities in northern Australia. President of the Republic of Indonesia and Australia Prime Minister agreed to enlarge and strengthen business and economic linkages in both countries. In the spirit of equitable growth, they agreed that in the bilateral development cooperation, the emphasis will be on six provinces in the eastern part (include Maluku) of Indonesia with focus on food security, energy security and infrastructure building. President of Indonesia found it important to step up cooperative relations with Australia because it is potential for development in Indonesia in general and in Maluku in particular. And vice versa Australia has agreed to do many things in economic cooperation with Indonesia, especially for the development and the welfare of the people in the Eastern Indonesian provinces. On the other side, the cooperation between Indonesia and Australia through Working Group of Marine and Fisheries (WGMAF) has been conducting since 2001 and it is continuing with the progress in the field of cooperation. is important to intensify and to actualize this background of cooperation into the conference which based on the two of main principles, 1) the conference will enhance the cooperation and exchange of information on the important issues, and 2) the conference will address the issues as common interest of both countries. Bilateral relations between Indonesia and Australia. strengthen the marine and fisheries cooperation between the two countries through comprehensive scope of work Exchange of views on the effectiveness of existing cooperation and discuss a new form of cooperation To facilitate discussion between State of Northern Territory and Maluku Province for the establishment of Sister Province. Participants from both countries will consist of: Relevant agencies that involved in the existing framework of cooperation, and others in research field or other government cooperation; Relevant agencies that involved in the existing private cooperation: Indonesia-Australia Business Council, Chamber of Commerce and Industry, representative from State of Northern Territory and Maluku province including regency/city (kabupaten/kota), investor, and other relevant private agencies.
